Editorial Policy & Engineering Methodology
Last Updated & Verified: October 2026 | Technical Standards Review Board
Yard & Slab adheres to strict civil engineering, architectural, and structural code standards. Unlike automated utility websites that copy unchecked formula snippets, every calculation engine on our platform is cross-checked against authoritative US building codes and material technical data sheets (TDS).
1. Concrete & Masonry Methodology
Governing Standards: ACI 318, ACI 302.1R, ASTM C94, ASTM C387
- Yield Calculation: High-strength pre-mixed concrete (e.g. Quikrete / Sakrete) adheres to ASTM C387. An 80-lb bag yields 0.60 cu ft; a 60-lb bag yields 0.45 cu ft; a 40-lb bag yields 0.30 cu ft.
- Waste Factor: All volumetric algorithms incorporate a standard 10% safety overage (adjustable to 5% or 15%) to account for deflection in wooden form boards and subgrade variations.
- Ready-Mix Break-Even Threshold: In the US ready-mix industry, ordering a batch truck ($165–$210/yd) becomes economically superior and labor-efficient when total volume exceeds 1.75 cubic yards (approx. 79 bags of 80-lb concrete).
- Steel Reinforcement: Slabs subjected to vehicular or thermal stresses require #4 (1/2" deformed) rebar placed on an 18" on-center grid elevated with 2" chairs, with 10% added for 12" splice laps.
2. Drainage & Geotechnical Calculations
Governing Standards: AASHTO M252, ASTM D4751, ASTM C33
- Corrugated Pipe Displacement: Standard nominal 4-inch corrugated polyethylene drain pipe has an actual outside diameter (OD) of ~4.3 inches (6" pipe has an OD of ~6.4"). We subtract this exact cylinder volume (π × r² × L) from the gross trench volume.
- Aggregate Density: #57 washed crushed stone (3/4" to 1" angular stone) has a standard compacted bulk density of 1.4 US tons per cubic yard (2,800 lbs/cu yd).
- Geotextile Sizing: Non-woven needle-punched geotextile (4 oz/yd² minimum) is sized using (W × 2) + (D × 2) + 4 inches to guarantee full burrito-wrap encapsulation without silt intrusion.
3. Building Code Safety (Balusters & Footings)
Governing Standards: US International Residential Code (IRC 2024 Section R407.3, R301.5)
- 4-Inch Sphere Rule: Guardrail openings must not allow passage of a 4-inch diameter sphere anywhere along the railing run. Our baluster algorithms calculate spacing down to 1/1000th of an inch to guarantee compliance.
- Nominal vs. Actual Timber Sizing: US dimensional lumber is dried and surfaced (S4S). A nominal 4×4 post actually measures 3.5" × 3.5"; a 6×6 post measures 5.5" × 5.5". Our calculators subtract the actual displaced volume from the cylindrical drilled hole.
4. HVAC Mini-Split Sizing & Climate Zones
Governing Standards: ACCA Manual J, US DOE & IECC Climate Zones 1–8
- Rather than multiplying a crude 25 BTU/sq ft, our algorithms integrate International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) climate zone mapping, ceiling height expansion factors, solar heat gain, and high-heat room offsets (kitchens and uninsulated garages).
5. Continuous Peer Review & Bug Bounties
If a material manufacturer modifies standard bag yields or packaging specifications, our technical team updates the computational models within 24 hours. Contact our engineering team at [email protected] to report formula inquiries.
